Hurricane Wind Categories - Saffir & Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale

Hurricane Category 1 (Sustained winds 74mph to 95mph)
Minor damage to exterior of homes.
Toppled tree branches, uprooting of smaller trees.
Extensive damage to power lines, power outages!

Hurricane Category 2 (Sustained winds 96mph to 110mph)
Major damage to exterior of home.
Uprooting of small trees and many roads blocked.
Guaranteed power outages for long periods of time – days to weeks.

Hurricane Category 3 (Sustained winds 111mph to 130mph)
Extensive damage to exterior of homes.
Many trees uprooted and many roads blocked.
Extremely limited availability of water and electricity.

Hurricane Category 4 (Sustained winds 131mph to 155mph)
Loss of roof structure and/or some exterior walls.
Most trees uprooted and most power lines down.
Isolated residential due to debris pile up.
Power outages lasting for weeks to months.

Hurricane Category 5 (Sustained winds greater then 155mph)

Are you evacuating during the hurricane?

Is my family’s life worth the risk to stay and lose a loved one? Do you know your hurricane evacuation routes? Have you made living reservations away from home during the hurricane? Have you secured your home and taken your dearest treasures with you during your hurricane evacuation?

Are you staying during the hurricane?

My wife is from Louisiana, she experienced hurricane Andrew firsthand and we stay during all hurricanes? Are you ready to battle the hurricane? Are your Trees Pruned and loose debris all tied down or picked up around the yard for the hurricane to pass? Are your windows boarded up or window shutters installed for the hurricane? Do you have a backup power supply like a Portable Hurricane Generator with enough fuel to run for at least a week or two till the utilities are restored from the hurricane damage? I have seen it first hand over the past ten years and people never take hurricanes seriously? My busy season at work is during the hurricane or summer months working in the Gulf of Mexico. Now hurricanes create work for me in the oil field industry but my family’s safety is more important to me. I usually start getting ready for the hurricane season about three to four month prior to the start of hurricane season in June.
